Zanzibar, Tanzania

Zanzibar is an  island in the Indian Ocean, 35 km off the coast of east-central Africa. Zanzibar is an archipelago of islands - the most famous being Unguja. The island is famous for its mix of exotic beaches, history (Stone Town being the capital) and diverse culture. The islands are sometimes referred to as the Spice Islands, because of the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper that are grown there. This destination has cultural influences from the Middle East, India, Europe, and Africa.   1. Zanzibar Island was once a major hub for the spice trade

  3. During the 19th century, Zanzibar was a major center for the Arab slave trade.

  4. Freddie Mercury, one of the most famous musicians of all time was born in Zanzibar and later moved to England and became the lead singer of the band Queen.

  5. Seaweed is a major export for Zanzibar, providing employment  for thousands of people. The seaweed is used in various products, including cosmetics, medicine, and food.

  6. A short boat ride from Stone Town to reach Prison Island, where you will find a unique and beloved attraction – giant Aldabra tortoises. These gentle tortoises, some over a 100 years old, roam freely on the island. Visitors can engage in an up-close encounter with these beautiful creatures.

Prison Island

is one of those great places of interest in Zanzibar, 5 km from Stone Town, you will reach the iconic prison island, with a main attraction of  seeing the nearby tortoise sanctuary. Some of the giant Aldabross tortoises.

  1. Visit Jozani Forest, as it is the last sanctuary in the world to see the Zanzibar red colobus monkey.

  2. Dine at Forodhani Gardens, set right in front of its most famous buildings, Old Fort and House of Wonders, this open-air food market with vendors who sell mostly Swahili and Zanzibari cuisine. You’ll know when you arrive as your senses will be overwhelmed by the fresh grilled seafood.

  3. Spice tour. Make sure to bring extra cash to purchase some spices and tea to take home. Don’t come full as there is a full tasting at the end of the tour.

  4. The Darajani Market (or Bazaar) is the main bazaar in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It’s the most popular place to come and get spices, dates, bread, fruits, and almost anything you could need. Beyond getting some souvenirs, it’s a fantastic place to soak in the culture.

  5. Quad bike tour to local village.

  6. Beach activities such as snorkeling, sail on a traditional dhow, jet skiing and of course so rest and relaxation by the clear blue waters.
